Let your old cell phone help

“Let your old cell phone help” campaign
How can an old cell phone help to children? Easier than it seems. Our company will contribute to the Safety Line operation for each retired cell phone brought to our shops. Consultants of the free Safety Line, which helps to kids and teenagers in crisis situations, can serve each fourth phone call. There are so many kids who cannot get through. However, the project launched on a New Year’s Day by our company’s O2 Foundation should change it. O2 will support the Safety Line operation with CZK 25 for each old or not working cell phone. This amount corresponds to the costs of handling a phone call of a child in need. The “Let your old cell phone help” campaign is aimed to raise funds to increase the Safety Line capacity.

In addition to that Telefónica O2 Czech Republic wants to support correct disposal of electronic waste, e.g. useless cell phones. Although the Electronic Waste Recycling Act has been in force since June 2005, Czechs – champions in PET bottles recycling – had not shown much effort so far. Only a fraction of the number of sold cell phones is returned for recycling. If a cell phone ends up on a dump rather than in a recycling process, all precious metals it contains are in vain. Let alone that such discarded cell phone is a very troublesome environmental burden. Toxic substances evolve and plastic materials which it is made from will stay here with us for hundreds of years before they eventually decompose. We will distribute the old cell phones to Rema Systém, a non-profit organization, operating the chain of electronic waste collection points across the Czech Republic.
