After the race, she did not conceal her relief at being freed from the pressure that she felt on her home turf before the competition. "Of course I thought about winning in front of a home crowd. The people were wonderful, but it was a good thing that I didn’t let it get to me and was able to keep my cool." In the last leg of the race, Kateřina was cheered on by 25 thousand fans.
At the close of her career, the Czech Republic’s most successful female competitor is also the patron of the Looking for a New Kateřina Neumannová project. This year’s Golden Ski competition was the symbolic kick-off for the projects first year. The project aims to find new skiing talent and its general partner is the O2 Internet Expres service from ČESKÝ TELECOM, which has also been one of Ms. Neumannová’s long-term sponsors.
From January to March 2006, the project will organise a series of races for children and adolescents. The first weekend rounds will begin looking for new skiing hopefuls on January 7 in Rýmařov and will continue in Nové Město in Moravia on January 8. The series concludes on March 5, 2006, with the finals taking place in Liberec, where the winners of the regional rounds will compete.
"I am happy to be involved with a skiing event that can be enjoyed not only by the best, but also by everyone who wants to compete in cross-country skiing. For me, the greatest reward will be the discovery of someone among these students who can follow in my footsteps," says Kateřina Neumannová when speaking about the new project.
